Hotel Shangri-La Makes a Splash – Santa Monica real estate

As the summer approaches, Santa Monica’s Hotel Shangri-La is looking to make a play for the SoCal poolside set, a move its president and chief executive officer, Tamie Adaya, isn’t shy crowing about.
“It would have been easy to make it into a museum,” says Adaya, who inherited the reins at the hotel from her later father, Ahmad Adaya, in 2004, and has worked to update and rebrand it — most recently with a $35 million facelift completed in 2008. “I wanted to make sure it was not just another remodeled hotel. The challenge was to maintain the charm and the bones of the hotel to keep the character.”
The spot’s reinvigoration includes “Hideaway Fridays,” from 4-7 p.m. beginning May 5 and “Endless Summer Sundays,” beginning May 22 from 12-7 p.m. Both will feature special playlists or guest DJs and a summer menu of poolside food and drinks on the nearly 11,000 square-foot deck. Adaya is set to co-host events with friends and tastemakers throughout the summer.
The hotel has cabanas ready to rent from $350 and a $25 day pass for the more-local set, but Adaya is also keen on maintaining an air of exclusivity. The owner is in the process of implementing a membership program similar to that of SoHo House.
“I don’t want just anyone who can pay, I want to populate the hotel with the right demographic,” says Adaya.
Rates are tentatively set to run in the ballpark of $1,500 to $2,000 annually and include pool and gym admittance, priority admittance to the restaurant and bar and mixers hosted, of course
