The PGA Tour’s “West Coast Swing” wraps up this week when it returns to Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California for the Northern Trust Open. Riviera CC usually attracts a strong field every year for the tournament and this year is no different. Five out of the top 10 ranked players in the world and the top nine players in the Fed Ex Cup standings will be participating this weekend.
The Northern Trust Open announced the groups that will tee off together, and some of the pairings are a fascinating watch. Defending champion Steve Stricker will be joined by Dustin Johnson, who led the first two rounds last year, and last week’s winner at Pebble Beach D.A. Points for the first two rounds. Another threesome of interest is reining Fed Ex Cup winner Jim Furyk, last year’s runner-up Matt Kuchar, and current Fed Ex Cup point’s leader Mark Wilson.
Some of the longer hitters on tour tend to perform well at Riviera over the years, like two-time winner Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, a perennial contender, but hitting the long ball isn’t necessary to succeed at the country club. The course ranked 5th on tour last year with the shortest drives but ranked 5th in toughest greens to hit. The greens are extremely tough targets for the Pros to hit because they are so well protected by there surroundings.
The weather forecast for the weekend doesn’t look promising for some well-played golf. There is a threat of rain expected through the weekend until Sunday when it is expected to subside.PGA Tour
